CRYSTAL FALLS — The Crystal Falls District Library offers the All Together Now Summer Reading Program for readers for every age levels.

All who sign up can come in on Thursday to get their summer reading bags, information, schedule and special prizes.

The first part of the program will run from Monday, June 12, to June 30. The program then will take a three-week hiatus before the second half, from July 24 to Aug. 11.

Children will get to spend the Book Bucks they earn during the program at the Summer Reading Store, which will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 14-15.

There are six different weekly themes: Friends Forever Week, June 12-17; Community Connections Week, June 19-24; Science That Serves Week, June 26-July 1; Expand Your World Week, July 24-29; Working and Playing Together Week, July 31-Aug. 5; and Kindness for Everyone Week, Aug. 7-12.

A description of what to expect at each age level —

— Babies: Along with reading several board books, babies will play with bags of clay, finger paint, sort shapes, toss inflatable globes, race toy cars, and play with mirrors.

— Toddlers: Along with reading several board and picture books, toddlers will match colors, create friendship necklaces, sort objects, use blocks for architecture, make mini maracas, play with a parachute, and write thank-you notes.

— Preschoolers: Along with reading several picture books, preschoolers will make paper chain friends, carrot number patches, paper hand wreaths, puzzles and kindness rocks.

There will be a special event for toddlers and preschoolers at 2 p.m. Monday, June 19. Police Chief Tim Bean and Fire Chief Steven Fabbri will explain what it is like to be a fireman and policeman.

— Ages 5 to 8: Along with reading several picture books, they will make some friendship trail mix, jingle sticks, harmonicas, kazoos, and bookmarks.

On Tuesday, June 27 at 1 p.m., children will meet with master gardener Keri Buffinton from the Spread Eagle Garden Center to learn about flower planting and plant their own flower.

— Ages 9 to 12: Along with reading some picture and non-fiction books, they will be making language trees and self-affirmation jars. There will be a Harry Potter Escape Room.

Jimmy Gathu, from the LP Sagola IT Department will have a session on how to code using Scratch at 9 a.m. June 29. Music teacher Emily Raffaelli will teach kids about musical instruments from around the world at 1 p.m. July 26.

There will be a special event for all children ages 5 to 12 at 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 3. They will host a Library Field Day with the Rev. D.J. Rasner, pastor at United Lutheran Church in Crystal Falls, along with teens from the track and cross country teams to assist.

– Teens/Adults: This year the teens/adults will be doing lots of interesting things. They will learn about artists Vassily Kandinsky and Wayne Theibauld and creating a donut painting; they will learn about spatial poetry and create their own Crystal Falls-themed poem, they will use potatoes to create symmetrical patterned works of art; they will make some no-sew blankets to be donated to the Caring House and St. Vincent DePaul; and they will make some coffee sugar scrub and bath bombs.

They will also read some essays and stories about what it is like to live with a disability. Then when discussing those writings, they will be joined by Sierra Endel, a dog trainer from Heart & Soul K9 Training. She will demonstrate how her dog, Mate, helps in her day-to-day life.

There are several events planned during Family Nights. They will have a Friendship Trivia Night and a Jigsaw Puzzle Contest. One family night, they will use sidewalk chalk to write messages of kindness throughout Superior Avenue.

There will be a cooking contest, where families will pick up a mystery box of ingredients from the library that they will then turn into a signature dish. Several restaurant owners have agreed to come in to judge the dishes.

There will be a community scavenger hunt, where families will have to find clues and items hidden in these Crystal Falls businesses: the Library, Ben Franklins, Crystal Theatre, Crystal Trading Company, Charlie's Emporium, and the Twisted Twig.

There will also be a lecture about the Rotary Exchange Student program. Anyone can register for Family Night events.

Another highlight of the summer reading program will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 29, when the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum will have its Out of This World program. Children and adults of all ages are invited to this one-time event.
