The Anne Arundel County Council voted 6-1 to pass a plastic bag ban for the county on Monday.

The new legislation bans plastic grocery bags from being distributed to customers at grocery stores in favor of paper or reusable plastic/canvas grocery bags.

Similar bans have already been passed in Baltimore County, Baltimore City and Howard County.

The ban will take effect Jan. 1, 2024. Retailers can provide paper and reusable bags for free until Feb. 1. After that, they will charge $0.10 per bag.
