Looking to cut down on waste in landfills, Kansas City, Mo. has introduced a pilot program that uses recycled plastics in asphalt mixes to create stronger roads.

Looking to cut down on waste in landfills, Kansas City, Mo. has introduced a pilot program that uses recycled plastics in asphalt mixes to create stronger roads.

Researchers mentioned that not only will roads be stronger, but they’ll be cheaper to create as well. The recyclables that end up in the asphalt mixes will be made up of plastic bags and used tires. Olivia English, founder of Live Green USA, brought together Kansas City, researchers, and paving companies to create the pilot program.

“Some of the hardest things to recycle right now are plastic and tires. You’ll find they’re really just sitting in the ocean or sitting in landfills," said English.
