Plastic Bags Banned In Anne Arundel County, Officials Decide

ANNAPOLIS, MD — Anne Arundel County officials this week voted to ban plastic

ANNAPOLIS, MD — Anne Arundel County officials this week voted to ban plastic bags in all county grocery stores, joining several others in the area that have already enacted similar bans, according to reports.

The Bring Your Own Plastic Bag Reduction Act passed 6-1 during a county council meeting Monday, CBS Baltimore reported.

"The county residents care about our trees, they care about our forest, they care about the waterways," JoAnne Zooler said, according to CBS Baltimore. "We've seen a 6-to-1 vote of the county council, which is very unusual and shows strong support from the council."

The ban was amended several times since it was first introduced in March, according to CBS Baltimore. Under the bill, grocery stores will also be required to charge 10 cents for each paper bag.

According to a WTOP report, plastic bags are currently banned in Laurel and Takoma Park. Prince George's County Council gave preliminary approval last month and is expected to pass a similar ban on plastic bags by month's end, WTOP reported.
